SSAT Vocabulary List

31 October 2012 Categories: Blog, Test Prep Information

After more than four years of helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, and other standardized tests, I recently started tutoring for the SSAT. It’s an important test for students considering applying to private schools. With the right preparation, the SSAT can be a stress-free part of the private school application process.

One of the biggest challenges in preparing for the SSAT is learning the necessary vocabulary. Knowing enough vocabulary comes into play most directly in the Verbal section. You’ll have to complete 30 synonym questions, like this:

Atone

  1. Inundate
  2. Purport
  3. Satiate
  4. Apologize
  5. Exacerbate
(The correct answer is D.) The level of vocabulary in the SSAT Verbal section is very advanced. Even avid readers will probably benefit from taking the time to study vocabulary lists.

Developing your vocabulary will also help you on the Reading section–the more words you know, the better you’ll be able to understand whatever passage the testmakers throw your way. And it will help you with the essay. If you can fit advanced vocabulary words in your essay (and you’re sure you know the correct meaning of the words and they’re appropriate in context), your score might go up a little bit.

I found a great list with plenty of SSAT vocabulary words you can study. Check out the vocabulary list by clicking here. I recommend choosing 10 to 20 words to learn every week. Make flash cards, or just write a list down and cover up the definitions of the words when you’re studying. Quiz yourself every week. And at least once a month, go back and review the words you’ve already learned, to make sure it sticks.

Good luck in your SSAT prep! (And, of course, if you’re in the Los Angeles area, feel free to contact me if you would like one-on-one help preparing for the SSAT.)
