Getting the best possible results for the SAT requires you to learn the material on the test, learn SAT test-taking strategies, and practice with real SAT questions and practice tests.

  • Learning the material: Of course, to do well on the SAT, you have to know the material that it tests you on. That includes all the math the test covers, basic grammar, vocabulary, and so on.
  • Learning SAT test-taking strategies: Knowing the material on the SAT isn’t enough. To get the best score you can, you have to know test-taking strategies. I’ll teach you time management, knowing when and how to guess, how to structure your essay, and other strategies to get the best score you can.
  • Practicing with real SAT questions and practice tests: The most important part of SAT prep is practicing with real SAT questions. It tests your understanding of the material and the test-taking strategies. Practicing with real SAT questions also makes you familiar with the test format and style of questions, which will make you feel more comfortable on test day. Finally, it also lets you know how you’re improving as your SAT prep continues.

My favorite resource for SAT prep is Khan Academy. Khan Academy partnered with the College Board (the people who make the SAT tests), so their resources reflect what will be covered on the real test very accurately. You can make a free account there for practice, and your account will be linked to your College Board account. Using your performance on any PSAT and SAT tests you’ve taken, as well as how you do on Khan Academy problem sets, Khan Academy will create custom-tailored problem sets for you based on what you need to work on. In our tutoring sessions we can work on some of these problem sets together, and you can also complete Khan Academy drills on your own between tutoring sessions.

I also bring an SAT prep book with me at all times which we can work out of. (My favorite resources is The Official SAT Study Guide for all of the real SAT practice questions it has. The Princeton Review practice SAT book is also a good resource for topic review, test-taking strategies, and practice questions, though the questions from Khan Academy and the Official SAT Study Guide more accurately reflect what you’ll face on the real test.)

When we meet for tutoring we’ll work through problems where you have the most room for improvement. I’ll guide you through practice SAT questions during the tutoring session. That way if you have any questions about how to apply the strategies we discuss, I can answer your questions on the spot. Before the end of the tutoring session, I’ll assign real practice SAT sections for you to work on for homework between sessions.
